What is the HSK?
The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì — 汉语水平考试) is the official standardised test of Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers. It is issued by Hanban / Confucius Institute Headquarters and recognised by universities, employers and immigration authorities worldwide. The HSK has six levels, from HSK 1 (beginner) to HSK 6 (mastery).
Which level should I take?
- HSK 1 · 150 words · basic everyday expressions · complete beginners
- HSK 2 · 300 words · simple conversations on familiar topics
- HSK 3 · 600 words · most everyday situations in China
- HSK 4 · 1,200 words · fluent interaction with native speakers
- HSK 5 · 2,500 words · reading newspapers and watching films without subtitles
- HSK 6 · 5,000 words · full mastery — the level required for direct university entry in China

Frequently asked questions
Does the HSK expire?
HSK results are valid for two years. Unlike the DELF or DALF, the HSK is a test, not a lifelong diploma. If you need it for university entry or a visa, check the date requirements of the institution.
Can children take the HSK?
Yes. The YCT (Youth Chinese Test) is designed for children and teenagers. AEF also prepares young learners for the YCT alongside the regular HSK.
Where are the exam centres in Shanghai?
Several accredited HSK exam centres operate in Shanghai. AEF guides you through registration and helps you choose the right centre and session date.
