DELF and DALF exams

The official diplomas of the French Ministry of Education. They never expire, they are recognised everywhere, and they are the only proof of level a French university or an employer accepts without argument.

Which exam, for whom

DELF and DALF cover the six levels of the Common European Framework. What changes between versions is not the difficulty of the level but the subject matter: you do not ask a nine-year-old to comment on a newspaper article.

  • DELF Prim — A1.1, A1, A2 · ages 7 to 12. Topics drawn from school and home, illustrated materials, short papers.
  • DELF Junior and scolaire — A1 to B2 · ages 12 to 17. The same standard as the adult version, with teenage subject matter: studies, friends, free time, social media.
  • DELF tout public — A1 to B2 · adults. Daily life, work, society.
  • DALF — C1 and C2 · adults. Long texts, argued presentation, synthesis of documents. This is the level expected for direct university entry in France.
  • TCF and TEF · these are tests, not diplomas. They give a level valid for two years, and are used mainly for immigration and citizenship procedures.

How a paper is run

Whatever the level, the structure is the same. Four papers, each marked out of 25.

  1. Listening — recordings, played once or twice depending on the level, with a question paper.
  2. Reading — documents to read, with questions that check you grasped the substance, not that you recognised words.
  3. Writing — a message, a letter or an argued essay depending on the level.
  4. Speaking — facing an accredited examiner: an interview, then an interactive task, then a presentation from B1 upwards.
  5. The result — you need 50 out of 100 overall, AND at least 5 out of 25 in each of the four papers. A single paper below 5 out of 25 fails the whole exam, however good the average. This is the rule candidates discover too late.

The levels, and what you must be able to do

The table you and your child should have in mind before choosing a session.

  • A1 — introduce yourself, ask simple questions, follow slow instructions. Roughly 60 to 100 hours of study.
  • A2 — get by in everyday situations, tell a story in the past, write a simple message. Roughly 150 to 200 hours.
  • B1 — hold a conversation, defend an opinion, grasp the substance of a text on a familiar subject. Roughly 350 to 400 hours. This is the level required for French citizenship.
  • B2 — argue a case, understand a complex text, follow a lecture. Roughly 550 to 650 hours. This is the level most French universities require.
  • C1 — speak without groping for words, catch implication and irony, produce a structured text on a complex subject. Roughly 800 to 950 hours.
  • C2 — mastery. Restate, synthesise and qualify with the ease of an educated native speaker.

Preparing

Reaching a level in class is not the same as passing the exam: the format has to be learned separately. Our preparation programmes work all four papers under real conditions, with mock exams marked against the official criteria.

After the exam

  • Results usually arrive four to eight weeks after the session, depending on the centre.
  • The diploma is issued by France Éducation international. It does not expire: a DELF B2 earned at fifteen still counts at forty.
  • If you fail, the whole exam is retaken: papers you passed are not carried over. That is why we enter a child only when they are ready, and never just to try.
  • An AEF level certificate is issued to every student at the end of their programme, whether or not they sit the official exam.

Sessions in China

In China, DELF and DALF registration goes through NEEA, the examination centre of the Chinese Ministry of Education — not through AEF, and not through the local exam centre. Three sessions a year: March, June and November. Levels are spread over three weekends, highest first.

November 2026 session — registration

Registration opened on 9 September at 2 pm and closes on 22 September at 2 pm. After that, the next opportunity is the March 2027 session.

Register on the official NEEA portal

The exact time of your paper is on your admission ticket, not on this calendar. Payment is online, by Alipay, CMB or Bank of China.

The year's calendar

  • March session — registration in January. In 2026: 6 to 18 January, papers on 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 March.
  • June session — registration in April and May. In 2026: 21 April to 7 May.
  • November session — registration in September. In 2026: 9 to 22 September.
  • DELF Prim and DELF Junior — separate sessions, including one in October, with registration opening in late August.
  • The 2027 calendar is published by NEEA at the end of the year. We pass it on to families as soon as it appears.

Where you sit the exam in Shanghai

  • The accredited centre in Shanghai is the Alliance française de Shanghai That is where the DELF tout public and DALF papers are held.
  • Registration, however, does not happen there: it is done online on the NEEA portal, which then assigns your centre and issues your admission ticket.
  • Places go quickly at B1 and B2, the most sought-after levels. Registering on the opening day is not an unnecessary precaution.

  • DELF Prim — A1.1、A1、A2 · 7
