Biology and Geology Club

Science taught in French, through experiment rather than lecture. Children observe, hypothesise and record — and in doing so acquire a scientific vocabulary that no language class provides.

Who it is forAges 9 to 15 · French at B1 level or a FLAM background
Assessment and certificationPortfolio of experiments · No formal examination

Objectives

  • Acquire the French vocabulary of the living world, matter and the Earth
  • Carry out an experimental approach: question, hypothesis, protocol, conclusion
  • Write up an observation precisely, as a scientist would
  • Read and interpret a diagram, a graph and a geological cross-section
  • Debate an environmental question with evidence rather than opinion

Programme content

  • The living world — cells, classification, reproduction, evolution
  • The human body — digestion, respiration, circulation, the five senses
  • Ecology — ecosystems, food chains, biodiversity, human impact
  • Geology — rocks and minerals, volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics
  • Practical work — microscope, dissection of a flower, growing seeds, rock identification
