Camps

The activities

At an AEF camp, French only takes up the morning. The rest of the day happens outdoors, in a workshop or in the kitchen — and that is often where the language really settles in.

Who it is forChildren and teenagers aged 6 to 17 · all levels of French
WhenDuring day camps and residential camps · Shanghai, Suzhou, Chongming and France

A typical day

French is never a subject on its own: it is the language everything else happens in.

  1. Morning — two and a half hours of French in a small group, by level
  2. Midday — lunch, taken in French, with staff at the table
  3. Early afternoon — a creative or cooking workshop
  4. Late afternoon — sport or a team game outdoors
  5. Evening — at residential camps: an evening gathering, stories, games, a film

The workshops

Each workshop has its own page, with what happens there and what is learned.

What the activities bring

  • Vocabulary that sticks — words learned by doing are forgotten far less than words learned by reading
  • Speaking up — asking for a tool, explaining a rule, negotiating a turn
  • Independence — finding your way, organising yourself and asking for help in French
  • A group — what children remember from a camp is, first of all, the other children

Supervision

  • French-speaking staff, present at meals as well as activities
  • Groups formed by age for activities, by level for French
  • A written report for parents at the end of the stay

Camps
